Sigur Ros Illustration, for Future Music Magazine
The band, Sigur Ros, is acclaimed for their distinctive sound and approach to making music. Future Music magazine interviewed the band in their studio, a converted indoor pool. I immediately thought of depicting the band immersed in a pool of sound to evoke their lush yet crystalline sound.

Hi, as others have commented your is great, and like seeing how you from the concept sketch to the final product. What I'm wondering is how long it takes you to go concept through to mark-up through to final photshopping?

Great art and it's cool to see the steps leading to the final image - but it makes one want to see even MORE different steps, for example during the colouring process.
Keep up the good work !
So gorgeous! Maybe one of my favorites from you, but I'm such a sucker for underwater anything... Your work is always inspiring! =)

Amazing. I love it.
i can't say anything other than this is the most ridiculous fuckin thing i've seen in a long time.. the way you blend digital and analog techniques blows away anyone out there right now
james, you rule. im procrastinating again....but at the same time secretly thinking about work at the same time. post more sketchbook stuff! my favorite
alvaro - happy new year!
patrick - great figure drawings on your blog, and the character sketches are quite nice. I also had Mike Metesi at SVA, he was a great teacher.
detlef - very accomplished drawings on your site; i like the attention to texture. It takes a few hours for the sketch, a day for approval, and another two or three days for the finish.
anon - I'll try and see if I can post more steps in the future
amy - thank you.
aaron - great photos! thanks for stopping by.
anon - thanks for the kind words; with each piece, I try to do something different and come up with some kind of 'innovation,' but it's getting more difficult . . .
josh - procrastination -> inspiration. More sketchbook stuff soon . . .
I am a total rookie at all of this. How do you transfer your sketch on bond paper to the Rives BFK? Or do you just start all over?
This is absolutely beautiful, by the way.
anon - I print out an enlargement of my sketch and transfer it either with a lightbox or with Saral transfer paper.
hi james,
your artworks are absolutly amazing for me!
like above, detlef already asking you,
i would like to know as well, how long it takes
from the first sketch to your fineart?
than an other question please. after transfering the sketch,
you scan the result of the transfer, and than you colore and finish it
in photoshop, right? i ask this, because your step "graphite and white chalk on rives bfk" confuse me a little. must be an artwork apart or do i mistake me?
thank you and please excuse my bloody english.
nice greets from germany! … joe

Sigur Ros is one of my favorite bands, and you've really captured their essence here. Bravo! Do you ever sell prints of your color work? While I'd love to purchase the original drawing, I'm sure there are wealthier collectors way ahead of me ready to pay you what its worth. If you decide to offer a print of it, please consider me first in line!
Calexico is another fav band of mine, and I love your art for the new album too.
